Canvas & Editing

Sketching on a Tablet

Scan a QR code to hand-draw on your phone or tablet and mirror it live onto the canvas.

DotDraw lets you hand-draw on a tablet or phone and mirror it live onto your canvas — no stylus drivers and no app to install. Scan a QR code, draw in the browser, and your strokes appear on the canvas in real time.

It works two ways: a blank sketch when you want to draw something from scratch, and edit on phone when you want to annotate an existing image.

Blank sketch

  1. Click the pencil icon in the canvas toolbar.
  2. A QR code appears — "Scan to start sketching."
  3. Scan it with your tablet or phone camera. A full-screen drawing surface opens (no login needed) — pinch to zoom, pan with two fingers.
  4. A sketch card appears on your canvas. As you draw on the tablet, the strokes mirror onto the card live.
  5. When you're happy, Capture the sketch — the camera icon on the card, or "Save & project" on the tablet. The drawing flattens into a plain image on your canvas that you can @ reference or edit like any other.

Edit on phone (annotate an image)

  1. Select an image on your canvas to open its editing toolbar.
  2. Click the QR icon ("Edit on phone").
  3. Scan the QR with your phone or tablet. The image loads as a locked background — draw, mark up, or sketch right over it.
  4. Your strokes mirror onto a sketch card on the canvas in real time.
  5. Capture to flatten the original image and your annotations together into a new image.

Card states

A sketch card is always in one of three states:

  • Waiting — the QR is showing; no device has connected yet.
  • Live — a device is connected and drawing is mirroring in real time.
  • Idle — the device disconnected; the card shows the last capture as a poster. Click "Show QR / reconnect" to pair again.

Tips

  • The tablet page is the one mobile-friendly surface in DotDraw — it's built for touch.
  • A sketch isn't part of the image pipeline until you Capture it. Capture produces a normal image (sketch_capture) you can @ reference, edit, or fuse.
  • Reconnecting is easy: if the tablet closes, rescan the QR (or click "Show QR / reconnect" on the card) and the session resumes.
