Sketching on a Tablet
Scan a QR code to hand-draw on your phone or tablet and mirror it live onto the canvas.
DotDraw lets you hand-draw on a tablet or phone and mirror it live onto your canvas — no stylus drivers and no app to install. Scan a QR code, draw in the browser, and your strokes appear on the canvas in real time.
It works two ways: a blank sketch when you want to draw something from scratch, and edit on phone when you want to annotate an existing image.
Blank sketch
- Click the pencil icon in the canvas toolbar.
- A QR code appears — "Scan to start sketching."
- Scan it with your tablet or phone camera. A full-screen drawing surface opens (no login needed) — pinch to zoom, pan with two fingers.
- A sketch card appears on your canvas. As you draw on the tablet, the strokes mirror onto the card live.
- When you're happy, Capture the sketch — the camera icon on the card, or "Save & project" on the tablet. The drawing flattens into a plain image on your canvas that you can @ reference or edit like any other.
Edit on phone (annotate an image)
- Select an image on your canvas to open its editing toolbar.
- Click the QR icon ("Edit on phone").
- Scan the QR with your phone or tablet. The image loads as a locked background — draw, mark up, or sketch right over it.
- Your strokes mirror onto a sketch card on the canvas in real time.
- Capture to flatten the original image and your annotations together into a new image.
Card states
A sketch card is always in one of three states:
- Waiting — the QR is showing; no device has connected yet.
- Live — a device is connected and drawing is mirroring in real time.
- Idle — the device disconnected; the card shows the last capture as a poster. Click "Show QR / reconnect" to pair again.
Tips
- The tablet page is the one mobile-friendly surface in DotDraw — it's built for touch.
- A sketch isn't part of the image pipeline until you Capture it. Capture
produces a normal image (
sketch_capture) you can @ reference, edit, or fuse. - Reconnecting is easy: if the tablet closes, rescan the QR (or click "Show QR / reconnect" on the card) and the session resumes.
